Do you think that emphysema would be a good enough reason to stop smoking?

I definitely think if you've been diagnosed with Emphysema and you DON'T stop smoking you're foolish. First of all, most folks must use oxygen to help with their breathing, and you can't smoke around oxygen. The oxygen company will even give you a sign to put in your window that says "NO SMOKING! OXYGEN IN USE." Second of all, you are making your lungs worse and not helping them to adjust to your illness.

It is very hard to quit when you are not sick - imagine how much harder it would be if you try when you are sick!

I do know how hard it is to stop smoking, especially when you are sick. I have a brother-in-law who had a stroke and was on oxygen for a while. He would ask to be taken outside the home so that he could smoke. I guess I was also trying to get the point across to the younger people to just stop or don't start.

By the time you need an oxygen tank for emphysema and you're still smoking, the concept of 'self-inflicted injury' really makes some sense, doesn't it?

Back in the 70s, I assisted at a public forum to help people give up smoking where a video of a man (cancer patient) smoking through the throat (tracheotomy entry point?) was shown as an example of entrenched addictive behaviour. Go figure!

And if you're end-stage ie dying, the infamous 'what's the point of stopping now' rings out.

BTW Why can't the partner without emphyema give up smoking to help the one he supposedly loves (my sister) who does have a heart condition et al?

So, what is the ultimate best reason to cease?
