Here we are at the start of another New Year and I am sure many of you are like me have made resolutions to lose weight and live a healthier life in 2007. By keeping, those resolutions will assist us in fighting cancer or avoiding it altogether.
Sun Exposure: In moderation, mostly everyone can benefit from ultraviolet rays. They can provide protection from a variety of cancers, including breast, colon, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and in some cases improve the survival rates of melanoma. All it takes is 10 to 15 minutes three time a week, should you be out in the sun longer always use a sunscreen. Have a friend or loved one check those hard to reach parts of your body for changes in the size or color of moles, blemishes and freckles.
Food and Diet: No single food can protect you from cancer but portions of the right food can give you cancer protection. Many scientists and doctors recommend that two thirds of your plate be filled with vegetables, fruit, whole grains and beans for fighting cancer.
Losing Weight: A healthy diet will help you lose weight and by losing 10 lbs you can protect yourself against breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers.
Exercise: Half an hour of any kind of physical activity five days a week, can be the best anti-cancer treatment available. You do not have to invest in a gym membership, just put on a aerobic or yoga tape or simply take your good friend Fido for a walk. Both of you will benefit from the exercise.
Smoking: Lung cancer is known as the main hazard of smoking; however, it can cause other cancers of the mouth, larynx and esophagus and can be at the root of stomach, liver, prostate, colorectal, cervical and breast cancers. If it is, your resolution to stop smoking this year, within 15 years your lung cancer risk can drop almost to the level of a non-smoker.
Listen to your body: Be aware of the changes in your body. Check for any lumps, or on going concerns with your doctor. Book your regular check-ups and mammograms, and if you are over 50 book year colonoscopies. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. If there is a family history of colon cancer, do not wait until you are 50.
Learn to listen to your body, remember your resolutions, and you, may be “Living a full healthy life in 2007.”
