Different treatment options work for different people who suffer with fibromyalgia. Here are the more common treatments your doctor might prescribe.

Fibromyalgia is a condition that many people have, and since there is no known cure, there are many treatment options available to help. While some treatments work better for some, doctors usually work with the patient to find a multi-step approach to this condition. For example, if you suffer from fibromyalgia, your doctor may recommend prescription medications to coincide with a special diet and exercise.

Good Communication is Key

If you have been diagnosed with this condition, then you know it is painful and can really limit your abilities. It can make you tired, and can leave you with aching, hurting joints and muscles. Your doctor will work with you to help diagnose your symptoms and find a treatment plan that is individualized for your particular case. Having good communication with your doctor is key in your symptom control, as only the two of you can find the right treatment that works for you.

Prescription Medications

Prescription medications are the most common forms of treatment for this condition. However, it is important to note that there has been only one drug that has been approved specifically for fibromyalgia. The medication is called Lyrica. Talk to your doctor about this particular medication.

Your doctor may try other drugs to help the symptoms. These include muscle relaxants, sleep aides, pain relievers, antidepressants, and injections. Antidepressants are often given to help reduce the pain associated with fibromyalgia and to help the patient get a better night of sleep. In addition, other common medications include COX-2 inhibitors, and anti-convulsion medications. Injections are being used more and more in the treatment of this condition. These are often cortisone shots that help joint and muscle pain.

Exercise Routine

Exercise is also very important when suffering from fibromyalgia. Gentle exercise can help ease joint and muscle pain and help patients rest better at night. High impact exercises such as high intensity aerobics and running are not recommended, as these can worsen the pain. However, light exercise such as walking, stationary bike, yoga and Pilates are excellent for this condition. Water exercises are also ideal for reducing joint and muscle pain.

Diet Changes

Diet is another important aspect of controlling the symptoms of this condition. If you eat a healthy diet and lose excess weight, it will be easier on your body and your joints. If you are overweight, your doctor may recommend a diet program that works well for your condition. In addition, you may want to avoid alcoholic beverages, excess sugar, foods with additives and artificial coloring and caffeine. All of these can make fibromyalgia symptoms worsen. Focus on a diet that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. A healthy diet can make you feel better and can help lessen the severity of your symptoms.

Many patients that suffer from this condition have also reported that some forms of alternative treatments can be very helpful. For example, acupuncture and deep breathing techniques work very well for some patients. If you are interested in alternative treatments, also look into seeing a chiropractor, massage therapist and even biofeedback.
